1. Applicants should be a at least of 18 years of age on 1 February of the year of commencing the scholarship.
2. Applicants should be a citizen of a participating country (list is given above) and be residing in and applying for the scholarship from their country of citizenship.
3. Applicants should not be a citizen of Australia, hold permanent residency in Australia or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently
4. Applicants should not be married to, or engaged to, or a de facto of a person who holds, oralso  is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency
5. Not be current serving military personnel
6. Applicants should not have previously received a long-term Australia Award
7. Applicants should satisfy any specific criteria that is established by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s country of citizenship
8. Applicants should be able to satisfy the admission requirements of the specified institution at which the award is to be undertaken
9. Applicants should be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Home Affairs to hold a applicant's Visa.
10. Applicants should not apply for a scholarship for a course of study at an academic level lesser than they have already achieved
11. Masters Students:
    1. Applicants should have bachelor’s degree to apply for Master’s Degree programs.

Award / Scholarship conditions:

Applicants for the Australian Awards Scholarship will have to sign an agreement with the Commonwealth of Australia, announcing that they will accept the terms of the scholarship.

Scholars must leave Australia for at least two years after completing the scholarship. Failure to do so will result in the scholar repaying the loan for all expenses incurred on the scholarship.
